For Christmas I received a lovely card from Carl McGrady with an angel that
he had painted in his stark and uniquely unmistakable style. Along with his holiday
sentiments, was an invitation to attend the opening of his solo-exhibition at Elan in Sewickley. The
{art}press team made the trip along the Ohio River,
past an ominous steel mill, still in operation, and landed in the quaint
town of Sewickley. This opening was certainly worth the trip. I had only
seen digital reproductions of Carl's work, but to see them up close and
personal, was quite a different story. When you see his work in person, it
emanates with color and expression, despite its very graphical, black and
white nature. Looking closely at Carl's work , one can see bits of blues and
other colors coming through white and black paint. Most of the work that I
had seen of Carl's had been vertical and horizontal lines, and I was
pleasantly surprised to see work in this show that complimented more round
shapes. This was also the first time that we had been to Elan Gallery. Joan
greeted us eagerly and we enjoyed our evening sipping wine and getting to
know more of Carl's friends and family as well as seeing some familiar
faces. This show is worth the drive and there is a great place to eat called
the Sewickley Café on Beaver street if you are hungry.
